Vibe Check
It’s been a week on trail we’ve already hit 96 miles! 100 mile marker will be hit likely by the time you’ve read this. It’s been a long crazy and also sometimes a monotonous week. I took off from the Southern Terminus only to back track it a half mile later searching for the PCT tagger (one who checks your permit and gives you a nice PCT trail tag).
Day 1 started with an odd mixture of emotion. I cannot tell you how many times I thought “what am I doing??”. But over the last week I’ve found friends and I found a groove. Trail life is different than normal life and it has been a culture shock. I can tell it’ll take a little time to fully adapt but I know and hope it’s going to be something I love.
What’s Happened?
Since the southern terminus send off, I’ve averaged 13.7 miles a day and have maxed out at 18 miles on day 4! We’ve walked through three cities/towns; Lake Morena, Mt Laguna and Julien! Jade, my high school best friend met up with me in Julien and met my trail friends! I had my first hitch into town, got free pie from Mom’s Pies (see below), ate BBQ with my squad and enjoyed my first laundry day and bed since pre-trail. The views have been epic and the sun is HOT. We’ve only had rain one day and we were luckily in town and rented a cabin for the evening so we didn’t have to deal with it. We got to experience some trail magic one day and hung out at a waterfall another. We’ve cowboy camped some nights and fit our tents in odd spots on other nights. Next stop will be to resupply in Warner Springs and then off to Idyllwild by the end of the week where I will likely take a 0 (hike no miles).
Injuries?
I think it’s safe to say that I have no major injuries. My body feels strong and better than the fatigue and aches I felt days 1-3. I do have a tight IT band due to overuse and that’s the only thing of concern right now. I’m thankful for no bad sun burns, blisters or other issues that have plagued other hikers so far. There are still many more weeks to go thought 😂
Next stop is Idyllwild but if you want to send a letter or something the next best place to send something is Big Bear. Post Office address below;
